An Autumnal Adventure in Southern Maryland

12.22.10

I was going to post more photos from Kelly and Ray’s Wedding Extravaganza (ahem… part one here and part two here…), but decided instead I would write, or rather show photos, from my trip to Maryland before all the leaves had fallen and the weather turned bitter. It seems fitting, since I’m in Southern Maryland again, that I do this post.

It has been interesting to note the change of seasons on each visit. The first was summer, with it’s heat and humidity, threatening to drench you in sweat at the mere thought of going outdoors. The next visit was beautiful with a landscape ablaze with yellows, oranges, and reds, with a backdrop of azure skies. The weather, while brisk, was easily shrugged aside with a light coat. Now, here on the first day of winter, with the remnants of recent snow clinging to the gutters and smattering shaded lawns, a heavy coat, hat, and gloves are well recommended and all but required for a thin-blooded California boy.  And to think it will probably get colder…

I’ve seen seasons, but I’m impressed by the range and severity here. I’ve been places that are hotter and I’ve been places that are colder, but those places don’t do the opposite extreme as well as here. It’s all the more fascinating to me, since San Diego rarely does any extremes…especially this last year, which was the mildest summer I’ve seen in my tenure. I can say that here in Southern Maryland this was the most autumnal fall I have seen in my life. I’ve seen some leaves change, but nothing on so large a scale. It is sad to see those same trees completely bare now. I’m interested what spring might look like, in order to get the full sense of life here on East Coast just south of the Mason/Dixon line. Well, before I take some photos on this trip, I’m going to take a moment to remember the season that has already passed in places like Calvert Cliffs, Point Lookout, St. Mary’s River, Solomons Island, Piney Point, and of course, ye little town of Leonardtown…

There was also a journey to Washington DC and the Baltimore Aquarium (or as I like to call it “The Baltihorse Aquaribub”).  Those photos will surface sometime…sometime after the new year, because this might be my last post of the year.  Another post might sneak it’s way in, but in case it doesn’t, a Happy Christmas to all and a hearty “Wassail” to the coming year!

And a hearty Wassail to you, my dear.

The lighthouse picture could easily be sold to old folks at a decent price. The mirrored trees shot is very nice. Solid work.

I guess I just need to find me some old folks. Thanks, Dave.
